CD-I (Part 2) Zelda Wand of Gamelon - Angry Video Game Nerd

In part two of the Nerd's CD-I series he plays through Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon: one of the three Zelda games released on the system. After failed plans with Nintendo, Phillips had permission to use Zelda characters for the CD-I; however Nintendo had no input in the games development besides some character designs.

The game is a side-scroller in similar style to Zelda 2, but you play as Zelda instead of Link. Its frustrating controls, confusing layouts and bizarre animated cut-scenes have led to it being universally panned by critics and gamers alike.

Angry Video Game Nerd (Episode 61)
CD-I (Part 3) Faces of Evil / Zelda's Adventure

In the third and final video in the Nerd's CD-I series he plays through Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda's Adventure. Link: the Faces of Evil plays similarly to Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and faces many of the same problems, including the confusing layouts and stiff controls.

Zelda's Adventure is a different style game; it's played with an overhead view and is modelled more like the original Zelda on NES. Its cut-scenes also use real actors instead of the zany cartoons so prevalent in the previous titles. Although it's different, it's not much better and features long loading times, annoying voice acting and a broken save system. The item menu also adds to the frustration; you must constantly be pulling it up and toggling through it to make any sort of progress.

All three of these Zelda games and Hotel Mario have added to the CD-I's legacy of being one of the worst consoles ever made, and one of the video game market's biggest failures.

Frankenstein

Back in 1880, it's safe to say Frankenstein novel author Mary Shelley didn't play video games... Yet even she'd tell you that if you stitch together a group of broken parts (terrible weapons, confusing level-design, impossible jumps) you end up with something pretty ugly that's hated by everyone..

Fast forward 128 years and welcome to the second part of the 2008 AVGN Halloween special. This time devoted to Frankenstein (or y'know... his monster) and it's diabolical appearances on home consoles.

With the aid of a very special-guest reviewer to share in the misery, The Nerd has dug-up three not-so-classics from the 8 and 16 bit era which are clunkier then the main protagonist they feature. He'll be going green with re-appearing bosses, knock-off Street-Fighter moves and infuriating password screens. Enough to make anyone wish theyd never been born (again).

He'll also discover that the monster he's created isn't just sat with him on the couch but embedded deep within his soul, forcing him to carry on torturing himself with terrible games until it destroys him. He should really have listened to Doctor Waldman.....

Atari Jaguar (Part 1)

The Angriest Gamer you've ever heard is back in part 1 of this 2 part review of the Atari's Flagship 64 bit system released in 1993... The Jaguar. In part 1 of this review The Nerd gives some Atari History as well as a sneak peak of some of the system's small and crappy library.
Watch The Nerd tell us about all of The Jaguar's failed and annoying attempts at system hardware innovation. The Nerd will show you just how convenient the lack of a spine label is, He will show you how the added handle to the game carts makes life a little easier as well as many more additions to the hardware make his colon quake. Expletives fly and emotions run high in this first part review of the Atari Jaguar.

In the Golden Age of video games, Atari was on top. The games may not seem like much compared to today, but for the time, these simple games were revolutionary. Atari dominated arcades, and home consoles with the Atari 2600. Then competition came along, and the market became consumed with video games. Then after 1983 after the infamous Video Game Crash, Nintendo and Sega rose up, and video games were revolutionized again. So Atari had a rough time keeping up, especially with the comparison in graphics and gameplay. With Nintendo and Sega in heated competition, Sega made the argument that the 16-bit Genesis was superior to the 8-bit NES; starting a "Bit War". Atari saw this as the perfect time to capitalize with one console, but it only reminded us that graphics don't mean everything. This is, the Atari Jaguar, which was announced to be the very first; 64 Bit System! But in the end, it's anticipated arrival on the feeding ground wasn't as fearful as it build up. Here, we'll briefly touch upon the rise and fall of Atari, and why the Jaguar failed to live up to what it could've been before the Nerd talks about the games themselves.

The Angry Video Game Nerd (Episode 25)
Sega CD

In the late 1980s, Nintendo was working on CD-based add-on for the current console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. While initially partnering with Sony, they later tried it out with Philips. Even after both deals went south for Nintendo, Sega decided to try out the same kind of peripheral for their own system, the Sega Genesis (also known as the Sega Mega Drive). The first few years of the Sega CD seemed hopeful, with games that featured famous film actors and full-motion video. Initially, some people saw it as an evolution for video games, due to the games' advanced graphics and high production values. It wasn't long after the Sega CD was released, however, that people started realizing how unnecessary the add-on really was. Because the device was so unusual, it was hard to develop more "natural" video games, which is resulted in a slew of games known as "interactive movies."
In this episode, the Nerd will delve into the library of the Sega CD and see why it was such a commercial failure. He'll cover many titles, some of which are classic genres you'd expect on the Genesis, while others are failed experiments at making a movie out of a video game.

Angry Video Game Nerd (Episode 74)
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties

One of the most bizarre and poorly-reviewed titles in video game history, "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" was a reviled and unsuccessful game for the (similarly unsuccessful) 3DO console.
Throughout the game, the player assumes the role of various characters in an adult romantic comedy storyline, deciding what plot development will happen next. However, instead of the forking, "Choose Your Own Adventure" storyline implied by such a game mechanic, players are kept on a linear story track, with their "wrong" decisions scolded before returning them to the decision screen.
The "Full motion video" promised by the game's packaging is similarly misleading, with only the game's (less than three-minute) introduction featuring FMV, and the entirety of the game proper consisting of still images. Non sequitur humor, illogical sequences of events, and bad post-production contributed to the unpleasant experience of playing the game.
Released in 1994 by Kirin entertainment, "Plumbers" immediately received terrible reviews and today appears on many lists of the worst video games of all time.
